What does this mean?

Hello Gene,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, mark and the colours, I concluded that this is an Antique Blue and White Japanese Plate Depicting the Mount Fuji on the background. This piece dates back to 1905-1910 period to be specific. Previous valuation can be considered almost accurate by dating the piece back to late 19th century. This Chinese mark under your piece reads as "Da Ming Chenghua Nian Zhi". Means “Great Ming Chenghua Period Make”, Chenghua mark is one of the most popular Chinese marks which Japanese liked to reproduce in the late 19th and early 20th century. Jiajing mark along this mark were most common Chinese reign marks used in Japanese reproductions.

Staple repairs of your piece seems like the restorator spent a careful time on this piece of art. Usually staples are left in metal colour without any additional painting work. But in your piece’s case the restorer actually worked to blend the repairs into the composition by painting them white. In the background we do see a traditional Japanese depiction of Mount Fuji. This is very characteristic to Japanese Porcelain Art.

Entirely hand painted.

Dimensions: 19 Inches Diameter, 3 Inches Height.

Condition: In need of restoration with previous works of restoration, cracks on the rim.

Provenance: Inherited.

200-300$.

I do not know much about this piece except that my step-mother (now 92) acquired it somewhere. She was an antiques dealer in the early 1980s and doesn't remember it. The photos show a stapled repair, and a large chip on the underside of the rim. A side view shows the rim is definitely not level. I had a quick appraisal done several years ago and he claimed it was a late 1880's Japanese copy of a Chinese design. More photos attached.
