We lived in China (Zhuhai) for 8 years and bought a antique traditional wedding bed from a furniture collector/trader just outside Zhongshan. The piece stood out and that is why we bought it. I like it, my wife hates it.....We recently sold our home and rather then moving it we might want to sell it. It did undergo some crappy repairs and would be good to be owned by somebody who appreciates it and maybe even have it restored by and expert. I believe this piece is special, the wood carving is elaborate and neat. Let me know if you need any additional information.
I do not have an information other then that we bought it and took it with us when we moved from China to the US.
Hi Wim,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
I agree that this is a beautiful bed. The market for Chinese furniture is fairly strong and I would not be surprised if it sold above estimate but that would be if it was offered for auction in a sale that included other Chinese furniture. It might be worth selling in San Francisco or Los Angeles, where there is a large Asian presence (Bonhams, Andrew Jones Auctions, Clars).
You might find it interesting to see what other Chinese wedding beds have brought at auction recently, at this link: https://www.liveauctioneers.com/search/?keyword=chinese%20wedding%20bed&sort=-saleStart&status=archive (free service, you might have to register to see prices).
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique Chinese carved hardwood wedding bed
late 19th/early 20th Century
Of rectangular form with lattice canopy over pierced rails raised on pierced sides, a woven fiber bed platform (rattan?), raised on shaped and carved short legs.
