Dear Andrew,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please upload a few better images.

With kind regards,

Ok. Is it the image quality that’s a problem? Do you need a specific angle? Is there something on it that you need to see in a particular area that tells you what you need to know? Please help with what you need to see and I’ll get you the photos ASAP. Thanks.

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for your response. There are no images uploaded at all. I need a total view and detail of the hande from both sides and a detail of the hallmarks which are usually at the end of the blade.

With kind regards,
Georg

My apologies. Not sure why they didn’t upload at first. Please attached now. Thank you.

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for the additional images. On the other side of the blade usually, the maker stamped. Sadly I see just the U.S. DFM 1863. There is a high possibility that on the other side of the blae the hallmark of the company Ames could be visible.

With kind regards,
Georg

I put some water on a paper towel and rubbed a little and it looks like something is there. What should I use to try to clean off whatever dirt/etc that is in there to try and see the markings clearly? What’s best?
Thanks.

Wow! Was able to get some smudge off and have never seen those words before. Please see the latest photo adds and let me know what you think.
Thanks!

Dear Andrew,

For cleaning the metal parts use a cotton cleaning cloth. Please rub the metal surface dry and add some gun oil to protect the metal surface from corroding and wetness which evokes stain.

The presented object appears to be a Model 1840 non-commissioned Officer's Sword with a metal scabbard. Regarding the hallmarks on the blade, it was produced by "Emerson & Silver, Trenton, New Jersey. It has a DFM inspector mark and is probably dated with 1863

This piece is in medium condition but there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 150 to 300 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

With kind regards,
Georg
