I have a collection of African masks. They were brought to the US approximately 20 years ago by an American who had lived with a tribe and his native wife in Africa over 30 years ago. I am in the position to sell the collection that I acquired 5 years ago.
The masks are slightly different each in the range of 6” wide x 16” tall.
Hello, this item is a group of six carved wooden masks in different styles, each reflecting contemporary workshop production rather than field collected ceremonial pieces. The surfaces show smooth uniform carving, light or artificial patination, and no layered residue from ritual handling. The raffia elements on two masks are clean and recently attached. Several masks echo Central and West African forms, but the proportions and finishing identify them as decorative export works produced in the late twentieth or early twenty first century.
This collection sits firmly in the decorative African art market where mixed sets of masks are common. Individual masks of this type usually sell between 30 and 60 USD. As a group, the set typically brings 150 to 250 USD depending on condition and buyer interest.
