Colombian Mammoth Bone Fossil Segment
Mammuthus columbi
Pleistocene (Eleven thousand years ago)
Unknown excavation source, presumed North America
Possible femur, or tibia; both bones in the leg of the animal.
The Columbian mammoth is the largest and most identified extinct large mammal found. Fully-grown males could reach approximately 13 feet at the shoulder, weighing close to 22,000 lbs. Both male and female Columbian mammoths grew long, curved tusks.
The tan bone is approximently 12" to 15" in length; with a weight of 40lbs. The bone is in superb condition with minimal visible restoration and is fairly complete with only typical and expected wear on the "knuckles" where its porous nature is shown.
