This is a woven interpretation of a work by French artist Joseph Fernand Henri Léger (1881 - 1955) in his personal “mechanical’ Cubist style. The carpets are known as Cuttolo Tapestries, as they were commissioned to be made by Marie Cuttolli (1879 - 1973) a French-Algerian entrepreneur and art patron. The woven image is based on a work by Leger that was in her collection. Cuttoli established Maison Myrbor in Setif, Algeria and Paris where she sold various textile designs and she revived the Ausbusson tapestry industry. The limited edition rugs are referred to being based on modern art ‘cartoons’ and finished pieces are called ‘easel tapestries’. This one is close to the style entitled ‘Jaune No 9’. These sold for significantly higher prior to the Recession. The estimate is based on actual past recent auction sales of comparable.
