Old black paint over original green paint with the makers name on a palque under the seat with the date of 1790. I have pictures.

Good morning afternoon, Robert,
Thank you for submitting photographs to Mearto for appraisal.
It looks like the name on the label (not plaque, which would be metal) reads "J.P. Marsh"; I have looked through Nancy Goyne Evans' book "American Windsor Chairs" which is the definitive book on Windsors and can't find any record or mention of a chairmaker working in Hartford or Windsor by that name. Makers usually branded their names so I suspect Marsh was the name of one of the owners. It was also uncommon - but not unheard of - for dates to be branded into the seat...the more common practice was to write the date in pencil.
The market for these has not regained the prices achieved since the late 2000s. Impacting the value tremendously is whether or not the painted surface is original or layers of subsequent treatments. My value is based upon it NOT having its original surface.
I hope the above information has been useful to you. Please let us know if you have additional questions, and thank you for using Mearto.
