What does this mean?

Thank you for contacting Mearto. I will try to help you as much as I can with your questions.

As far as how you should price your work, a good rule of thumb for artists is to first calculate the cost of your materials. Next, estimate the time it took to create the piece. If you don’t remember exactly, perhaps make a new piece and consciously work by the hour. Then decide how much your time is worth. Many artists tend to underestimate this, so I urge you to find a number that really feels sufficient.

A quick search of modern copper sculptures by unknown artists auction prices shows me numbers between around $50 and $300.
As you probably know, established artists can command higher prices.
My advice as to how to become established is to create a portfolio and get your work out there. These days, online portfolios are the norm. You don’t necessarily need to hire a web developer, at last staring out. Check out Wix and Squarespace. They have free versions, and are very user-friendly.

You mentioned that you’ve shown your pieces in restaurants. Mention that in your portfolio, along with show dates. If your previous career or education is related to your craft, you could include that too. You need an artist statement as well. I recommend looking at other artist statements online for guidance. Talk about your influences and your intentions with your art. Also, I would have some business cards made on which you write “contemporary sculptor” or something like that, so people can find your site and contact you.

Getting into galleries is challenging. Some artists use a direct approach. If you want to do this, it might make sense to bring some high-quality images with you to show your work. Don’t let rejection discourage you though. Many galleries just won’t accept walk-ins by policy.

Another way to find your way into galleries is by networking. If you can get to know gallery owners and other artists in your field, you have a far higher likelihood of being included in shows. If your area has monthly gallery walks or show openings, be sure to make an appearance. Introduce yourself, maybe discuss the work on display, ask questions about the artists’ processes. If you feel comfortable, leave your card and explain your work. You don’t have to do so right away, you can observe first and then do this at your second or third visit. To meet other artists, ask them about their work, their methods, maybe see if you can visit their studios.

This book has been recommended to me in the past and may be useful to you:

I wish you the best of luck. Don’t be discouraged. If you keep at it, someone will be interested in showing your work and you’ll be able to further expand your portfolio.
