What does this mean?

Hi Walt,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An American studio art glass flambe vase
unattributed maker working at the Corning Studios, Corning, NY, late 1970s
Of circular section and baluster form in a red/orange/cream flambe palette, the underside indistinctly signed, appears to be dated 1978
12 inches tall, 4 inches greatest diameter at rim
CONDITION: good condition
PROVENANCE: acquired by client's parents at Corning in the 1970s
$100-150*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.

Yes to all of the above. Signed by the maker. But I can’t read the signature. Yes. It was purchased at Corning.

Delia May 09, 19:09 UTC

Can you take a photograph of the signature and attach that so I can see if I can read it? Thanks!

Walt oberwanowicz May 09, 20:45 UTC

Absolutely. I’ll try to load it

Walt oberwanowicz May 09, 20:50 UTC

Let me know if you can see the signature

A little bit; thank you! It looks like it starts with a C(?) and has a date of 1978.
I'll start researching Corning glass artists in the late 1970s as that would be the most likely lead.

I've reached out to Corning about a list of artisans and the archivist there is asking to see a photo of the signature so they can advise - I need your approval to consult outside of Mearto - is that OK?

Yes. Absolutely!! Thanks so much. Walt. 732-239-5982

I've heard back from the archivist at Corning; unfortunately, they weren't able to find a match to the signature with any of the artists working in the late 1970s so it may have been an artist who did such a small body of work that they did not bother to record it.
As that is the case, it is best identified - and appraised - as follows:

An American studio art glass flambe vase
unattributed maker working at the Corning Studios, Corning, NY, late 1970s
Of circular section and baluster form in a red/orange/cream flambe palette, the underside indistinctly signed, appears to be dated 1978
