Blue mottled glass bowl with red rim. Signed by Chihuly. Dated 1994. Approximately 9 x 11 inches. **Damage to rim. See in photos.**
My parents were personal friends with Chihuly. He gave it to them personally.
Dear Nelda,
Greetings and thank you for calling upon the experts at Mearto to evaluate your art glass bowl by Dale Chihuly. This well designed example of his work is only overshadowed by the personal connection you have to it.
This piece has excellent colors and shape however, as I am sure you are aware, the small chip does affect the value of the piece. If this piece were offered at auction without damage you could expect $2500 - $3000 at auction (perhaps a little more with the provenance but that is speculative).
The damage reduces the overall value considerably and I would expect this piece to sell in the range of $800 - $1000USD. I see that you have no intention of selling this heirloom, good, this has a wonderful family history. That being the case, I recommend that you carefully seek out a qualified glass conservator/restorer who can assure that the chip is stabilized; perhaps via Chihuly's studio. I don't know if that is a service they offer but it's a good place to start.
Please let me know if you have follow-up questions.
Most Sincerely,
Erin-Marie
