The Disney Snow White 50th Anniversary gold coins were issued in 1987 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which premiered in December 1937, which was the first full-length cel-animated feature film produced in the United States. Created under the direction of Walt Disney, it was considered a massive financial risk at the time—critics called it “Disney’s Folly.” Instead, it became a groundbreaking success and established feature-length animation as a viable art form and industry.

By 1987, the film was widely regarded as one of the most important works in cinema history and a cornerstone of The Walt Disney Company. For the golden anniversary, Disney licensed commemorative collectibles, including gold coins and medallions featuring Snow White and each of the Seven Dwarfs, limited-edition anniversary designs (often marked “50th Anniversary 1937–1987”) and proof-quality finishes in presentation capsules or sets.
