What does this mean?

Hi Sophia,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Donna Karan revolutionized American fashion when she launched the Donna Karan New York label in 1984. After gaining experience designing for Anne Klein, Karan sought to create sophisticated, practical clothing for professional women. Her influential concept of the “Seven Easy Pieces” offered a versatile wardrobe built around interchangeable garments that could transition seamlessly from work to evening wear.

Emphasizing comfort, elegance, and modern lifestyles, Donna Karan helped define power dressing in the 1980s and 1990s. The brand's focus on wearable luxury and female empowerment reshaped contemporary womenswear and established Karan as one of America's most important fashion designers.

The corset-inspired bodice, with structured bust cups and seaming create shape and support while emphasizing the waist. It borrows from traditional lingerie construction but translates it into elegant day-to-evening wear. The thin straps keep the silhouette light and feminine, balancing the tailored structure of the bodice while the close-fitting, column-like shape skims the body without excessive volume, creating a sleek, elongated look.

The use of a subtle gray plaid evokes classic suiting and professional attire. The contrast between a business-like textile and a fitted, feminine silhouette is a hallmark of late-1990s and early-2000s designer fashion. Rather than relying on bright colors or embellishment, the dress derives interest from tailoring, proportion, and construction.

This dress would almost certainly have been paired with a jacket for a knockout professional statement that transitioned easily to a more evening-ready look by dropping the jacket and adding a scarf or elegant statement jewelry.

Donna Karan's pieces sell best in the retail thrifted and I could easily see this priced at over $100 if the condition (hard to tell in photos) is good. However, when sold at auction (the market Mearto uses for our appraisals), similar pieces are not bringing quite as much; I would expect this to sell between $30 and $50 at auction.

If you're planning to sell this privately, I would price it at $125 so you can be competitive with retailers.

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.
