I believe my great uncle brought it back from the Korean War

Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a japanese-american oillamp of the 1880s. The gourd shape tokoname terracotta vase used as a lamp base shows designs of a dragon and clouds in relief, the textured surface is very typical for this type of terracotta. The burner was made by Plume & Atwood manufacturing, the metal mount is most likely also american. Korea was under japanese colonial rule from 1910-1945. This lamp might very well have been used in Korea, but the import of the vase to the US and following assembly in the US is also likely. The estimate is based on similar items sold at auction, prices in the trade are usually higher. There is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the item.
please add a closeup photo. This really looks like terracotta, viewed from this side of the atlantic. Happy NEW YEAR!
Actually this is brass not terracotta.. does that make a difference?
