Looks very old based on canvas and wood seen from back of painting. Dimensions with frame are: 39.5" w x 54" h Painting is visually dark, looks like 1700's or 1800's. Very ornate dress and chair
Pamela Bonino owned it before I did. I know nothing else about it.
Dear Stephen,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented item appears to be by the female artist Emily Elias. It is signed on the lower left, and it measures approximately 54" h x 39.5" w. It is housed in a carved gilt frame. The condition looks very good overall.
This is a domestic scene of a young woman sitting in a chair. Many details of the dress and the table are noticeable here. The colors are rather dark due to the varnish of the painting. This is a typical painting from the Victorian era probably executed at the end of the 19th century, beginning of the 20th century.
Emily Elias was a British artist active around 1884 and 1901. From 1882 until 1890, she exhibited several times at the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy in London in 1884.
Unfortunately, after checking our records, it seems that this particular artist is rarely offered on the auction market, and the most recent auction result that we have is for a painting sold in 2016 in London, UK. Therefore, the estimate highlighted in red has been based according to the following criteria, which are the most recent existing auction market, the subject work’s size, the composition, and the condition based on photographs and comments provided.
Best regards,
Karine
