5' Eagle (wing span) made of teak wood, master carver (see mouth and tongue) on a 'burl' of wood (not sure what kind) 5' lenght; 5' tall ; 3' wide. Note: these are pictures I took after moving the Eagle from one home to another, the move created some dust to settle on the Eagle. the piece has since been clean and oiled. I can/will take current pictures if I decide to sell. Thanks P.S. If it would be helpful I can take/send close up picture of the unique professional carvings of the wings/back/head etc. The detail carving is really impressive, this is hand carved by a professional carver not some chain saw enthusiast. Unfortunately I have not been able to find any signiture or markings, but I may not be looking in the right place.
25 years ago I bought this from a New Hampshire musician who won the states country music award and needed financing to move to Nashville to start his career. I used to own a consulting firm 'The Eagle Group'. I have been retired and I'm considering selling it to another individual or firm with the word Eagle in its name or a Eagle as a mascot etc.
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be an extra large tree root carving depicting a large bird or mythical bird sitting on an old pine tree. The simplified pine branches are a typical feature in chinese and japanese art. Judging from the wood, I assume southern elm, and the artistic freedom shown in the depiction of the bird I would attribute the bird sculpture to a chinese master carver. Similar carvings have been offered or sold at auction in recent years, but none of similar size. The estimate is based on these auction results, but the extra size is difficult to price in. A patriotic enthusiast might be willing to pay much more.
