Early 20th Century Psychiatrist's Fainting Couch
This Fainting couch is from the turn of the century, and is in original condition, as far as I can tell. It is covered in diamond tucked leather, with pleating on the sides. It is a wooden framed piece, with another wooden frame below the couch that is connected by 4 wrought iron coil springs. One of the slats underneath the couch has the name of the companies that produced it, along with the patent dates. They are, "The Toledo Upholstering Company", and "The Hard Spring Company". The patent dates are in the late 1800's. This is a very unique item, and I have not been successful at finding another piece of furniture anywhere that has the same wrought iron coil springs. There are 2 tears in the leather, between 2 buttons ====== =

All I know about the history of the couch, is that supposedly, these 2 company's came together to produce this couch around the turn of the century. I have no idea how many more were produced, or if any more were produced at all.

The term "fainting couch" is a modern one for what is generally considered a recamier, recliner or chaise longue. I suspect it may have been used by an analyst or psychiatrist, though the presence of springs is, I agree, quite unusual. In my nearly 30 years of appraising furniture, I've not seen one like it. I don't know how broad its market is. I've valued this based on what other tufted leather recamiers have brought at auction, with a premium for the springs.

The rectangular bed with one raised end, tufted black upholstery overall, raised on four coiled iron springs. Underneath of spring support stenciled
30 inches wide by 80 inches long by 16 inches deep
CONDITION: overall in good condition with some oxidation to springs and minor separations to upholstery.
