Hello, the item I am presenting came from a flea market in France. I cannot tell you who made it, but I recognized the handmade texture, the age, and obvious use. Upon further research when getting it home, it looks to be of Congo origin, specifically the Teke peoples ceramic style. Made of clay, in fantastic condition, with obvious ware of liquid on the front of the jug.

Hi Danielle,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
You're correct about this being African in origin; the Teke people were among those who have been making earthenware vessels for centuries. Comparatively speaking, this is not very old; based on the surface, which retains much of its original glazed top layer, it dates to the 19th Century.
Related vessels have sold at auction recently for € 150-250.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique African glazed redware jug
possibly Teke culture, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Probably 19th Century
Of circular section with conical lip and tall neck, single loop handle and bulbous body with central band, all on a flaring circular foot. Unmarked.
22cm (8-5/8 inches) high
CONDITION: With minor rubbing and losses to surface commensurate to age and use.
PROVENANCE: Acquired at a flea market
€150-250*
