Edward Moulthrop (1916–2003) was an influential American woodworker renowned for pioneering modern woodturning. Often called the "father of modern woodturning," he created large, striking vessels from native woods, blending artistry with craftsmanship. His innovative techniques, such as using epoxy to stabilize wood, allowed him to craft iconic, monumental bowls with rich textures and finishes, leaving a lasting legacy in contemporary wood art.
Moulthrop's bowls have a large and devoted following, particularly those offered at auction, where there have been numerous offered examples, selling in recent years for prices from $475 to $7,000. It should be noted that his pots or vessels that have a small hole at the top or are in a donut-shape tend to bring more than the bowls of more typical form, which would include yours. An estimate of $1,200-1,800 is in line with where similar bowls have been estimated, and sold.
