The mid-1800s, pre-civil war, rolled arm sofa, Empire Era. Recently reupholstered in gold brocade fabric, wood is either mahogany or walnut, I lean more towards mahogany because it is such a dark red. It is 88 inches wide, 37.5 tall at the back, and 26 inches deep for sitting. There is wood scrollwork at the back of arms. It sits on two wood pedestal type feet that run from front to back. It is extremely heavy and massive in size. There are 3 segmented cloth sections where people can lean back on.
The original owner was an airline stewardess for Pan American airlines during the sixties and seventies before retiring in Arizona. She traveled the world and collected antiques and other collectibles.
Good morning, Rose,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. What an interesting sofa! I am fairly certain that with some time to do additional research I could determine a specific area of manufacture, which might affect the price, but given the limited time of this appraisal, I will base my valuation on this being an American sofa as indicated.
Based on recent auction sales of American Empire period sofas, the photographs and the information provided, and subject to examination and further research, this is:
Am American Empire mahogany veneered sofa
In the French taste, possibly made in the Southern States, second quarter 19th Century (1825-1850)
88 inches wide, 37.5 tall at the back, and 26 inches deep for sitting
Reupholstered in the 20th Century
$800-1,200 (represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking prices may vary.
If you'd like me to try to research the possible area of manufacture for this (which would expand the 48-hour window for completing this appraisal, please let me know, or if you have additional items to appraise.
Thank you again for using Mearto.
Thank you so much for your appraisal. The value is what I had supposed it to be - not bad since I only paid $250 for it 4 years ago; no one else wanted to move it.
Sincerely, Rose Hoyer
