Engelhardt bass/Cello
11 July 2019
Description

I dont even know if this is a bass or cello or what it is... but it is about 48 inches from top to bottom with is 18.5 inches across the widest point at the bottom and 14 5 inches at the widest part at the top. The body is 5 inches thick. It appears to be older, probably vintage? As you can see from the pics it's got 1 string missing and some minor dents and scratches along with a chunk about an inch long chipped off on the back. Inside the body says Engelhardt.. Model: E 55 4/4 Serial: 9/9 Everything seems to be in working order to my untrained eye... strings and working parts turn..

What does this mean?

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Based on the photographs, this is an Engelhardt Cello, model 5544. It was made in the USA and is a 4/4 (full) Cello, 48" in length. The instrument bears a serial number of #919 placing its date of manufacture at 1970. The instrument's condition as observed in the photographs is poor. There is chipping on the instrument's back, numerous finish scratches, one significant crack observed on the instrument's front, and structural damage at the base of the tailpiece extending around the side of the instrument. Engelhardt cellos are often used by schools as teaching instruments for beginning cellists. The condition reflects heavy prior use and, unfortunately, seam damage that renders the item of decorative value as repairs would not bring its value above the cost of a restoration. The estimate reflects its value for decorative purposes.
