Oil on canvas, floral still-life. Appraised in early 1980's as School of Jan van Huysom, ca. 1700. Dimensions: 25-3/4 x 20-5/8".
unknown
Dear Courtney,
Thank you for your help and patience.
The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 25-3/4 x 20-5/8". The painting depicts a bunch of botanically correct flowers in a glass vase on a plate or table. This painting is comparable in the botanically correct depiction of the flowers and the photorealistic insects with the school of the Dutch artist Jan VAN HUYSUM (1682-1749). Van Huysum usually showed monumental and sculptural decorated vases and not glass vases in his painting and painted on wood. This motif is more or less the standard of the Dutch still life paintings in the 17th century. This painting was made by an unknown artist and follower of van Huysum in the second half of the 17th or the first half of the 18th in the Netherlands.
Comparable objects were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in good condition and there is no severe damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 3.000 to 6.000 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
George
Flower close-ups submitted.
Also in the interest of completeness, I'm adding some images of the writing on the back of the frame; don't know if they are relevant or helpful to you. It appears they were added at some point by owners, the framer, etc.
Hi - Just checking in about the status of this appraisal. Thx
Hello and thank you for getting in touch with me. I've attached some images of the back. As you can see there's a rather elaborate system of screws and braces. When the first backing is removed, underneath it is a wooden frame with crossbar. The painting is firmly attached to this wooden frame at the edges (it is not in contact with the crossbar itself). It cannot be further removed. I'm attaching a picture of the painting from the side, lying flat on a table. Also attached is an image of the name Van Huysom written on the back. I will submit close-ups of the flowers next.
