Medieval illuminated manuscript page on vellum. I believe it to be authentic but that's what I'm asking. It hung in my mother's home since the 1960s but I have no paperwork or other proof of provenance.
17 3/4" x 25 1/4" framed
Hi Jennifer,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
When appraising medieval manuscripts, a few key points are considered: age, complexity of the composition (these ranged from very modest to very ornate), the materials used (tempera, gold leaf, ink, vellum, parchment or laid paper) and condition.
I can’t confirm that this is vellum from the photos but the style used is one that was very popular during the late 19th Century, during what is generally referred to as the Gothic Revival style.
Ideally, this would be looked at out of the frame and in person to see the condition of the vellum (if that’s what it is), whether it’s laid down, if it’s lights-struck etc. What I can see from the photos is that the support (possibly vellum as you suggested) has been exposed to changes in humidity and it has pillowed somewhat where it once was tight and flat.
Other manuscript pages of similar age, size and condition that have been auctioned recently have sold for around $100, rarely more than $200.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique Gothic Revival framed manuscript page
Probably late 19th Century
Centering a pilgrim on horseback holding a chalice and alongside a Tree of Life, possibly with writing to the verso
25-1/4 by 17-3/4 inches
CONDITION: framed, not examined out of the frame
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$ 100-200*
