An old canvas of some sort with 1800’s nail heads attached to old wood. The painting is labeled “battle on the sea shore.” With a very ornate antique frame. On the back it has writing saying it was from the gallery of art Washington DC 1885. Copy of the original painting. Right lower side says “ After Burnier”(hard to read) by G. Hayter size approximately 40 1/2”x 26 1/2” not including frame
I know it came from the east coast. The family had it for generations. The family had very rich ancestors.
Dear Chantelle,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 40 1/2”x 26 1/2”. The painting depicts a beach scene with cows a shepherd and a boat. This painting was made as a copy after a painting by Burnier. It is signed with the name G. Hayter. There is an artist known with with the name and life dates George HAYTER (1792-1871). It is doubted that this was the artist because his artworks are much better in the depiction and his life dates do not fit with the date on the frame 1885. This artwork was made either shortly before 1885 and as a very unlikely possibility could be an unfinished late work.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 300 to 600 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
