It is bust of two ladies. The is signed on the back L Bracony 1893 which is Leopold Bracony and stand approx. 36” inches. I aquired it from my mother when she died. She had it for around 30 years. Not sure where she got it. Not sure what material it is made from.
I acquired it from my mother but I do not where she purchased it. It could have been a estate sell
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a chalkware bust with bronze finish by or after Leopold BRACONY (act.1892-1926) depicting a two young women in embrace, on a neo-rococo base, signed at the back L Bracony and dated Paris 1893. Chalkware reproductions were common in the Belle Epoche era, they were an inexpensive way to decorated the home. An artist who did not have the money for a bronze cast often turned to chalkware instead. The estimate is based on similar items sold at auction. There is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to it.
There is a likelihood that this is an original work by Bracony. Some of the details,e.g. lace are difficult to cast and the patination is very complex and carefully applied. There is no production number or sign of a manufacturer. I have seen a number of plaster busts by various artists through the years. If the artist had no money to pay for the bronze casting, the execution in this inexpensive material was a way to participate in exhibtions. There is very little information available about this artist. Not a single item in any French museum.
The question I have is this a work by Leopold Bracony or was this made by another artist reproducing one of Bracony works? Bracony did a lot of work in marble and bronze. What do know for sure?
