Hi Elizabeth,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This table was made during the period (late 19th and early 20th Centuries in the US) known in the antiques field as the Colonial Revival, a movement that sought to revive elements of American colonial architecture, material culture and the decorative arts. It emphasized symmetry, classical details, and traditional building materials. This style reflected a nostalgia for America's early history and craftsmanship.
The gateleg form was introduced in England in the late 17th Century (circa 1670s and is denoted by the boldly turned legs and hinged swing supports - or 'gates ' that supported the side leaves when they were lifted. When these tables were first made, the form was very practical as houses were small and these tables could be "folded" when the leaves were down the table could be moved against a wall or otherwise out of the way in a room.
The form was so popular that it continued to be reproduced well into the 20th Century by numerous companies, including by the Braude-Pierce Furniture Company of Warsaw, Ind., a mid-20th-century American manufacturer known for producing stylish and affordable furniture. I have never before seen a table that uses leaves by another company (in your case, those by the Evansville Top & Panel Company).
Unfortunately, even period (early 18th Century) examples of this form bring modest prices when sold at auction and reproductions bring even less. Comparable examples that have sold recently have achieved prices ranging from $50-200
