This is an antique, mid to later 18th century, or 1700's, tall case clock by an English clock maker, George Hewitt (1733-1807) from Marlborough. It is likely oak that has been stained to look like mahogany. The face is chase engraved and cast brass. and the hood has a hand carved scrolling foliage band and is topped with 3 finialsMarlborough is a small town in the county of Wiltshire in England and George Hewitt and his son by the same name were well-known provincial clock makers recorded in the Wiltshire area from 1750 on. Hewitt Sr was also an accomplished watchmaker, jeweller and goldsmith. They are documented in the book, 'Wiltshire Watch and Clockmakers' book by John Young.
