Gilbert Poissant Signed Italian Ceramic Platter
22 January 2026
Description

I thought I would contact you regarding a possible appraisal for a gift we received several years ago. We will be moving overseas, and I’d like to know if it would be wiser to sell/donate the piece rather than have it shipped to Europe. The piece is by Gilbert Poissant – please see attached for images. The tray has been in our storage unit for a few years and has really never been used. Thank you in advance for your assistance, Guy Dansereau 450-626-9268

What does this mean?

Hi Guy,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

According to his website, multidisciplinary Canadian artist Gilbert Poissant (b 1952) is best known for his work in ceramics, sculpture, murals, installations, and public art. He has built a long and varied career rooted in material exploration and integration of art into architectural spaces. Originally trained as a ceramicist, he expanded his practice into sculpture, murals, installations, and mixed media, including wood, paper, stone, found objects, and digital techniques. He continues to live and work in the Mont-Saint-Hilarie region, near Montreal.

While he's had a long career and his works are in the collections of major museums internationally, there aren't widely published auction sales records for him such as one might find for artists regularly traded in the open art market (e.g., via Artnet or Invaluable).

I found auction catalogs from a benefit sale for the Musee des Metiers d'art du Quebec (MUMAQ Foundation) where works by various artisans, including Poissant, were offered, but not definitive sale prices for his pieces.

The absence of easily accessible price data likely means that most Poissant works are sold through galleries, direct commissions, or museum-related events, rather than large commercial auction houses. This is common for artists whose work is primarily in ceramics, public art, or studio practice rather than in a high-turnover auction market.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

Gilbert Poissant (Canadian, 20th/21st Century)
Painted platter
white earthenware or porcelain
signed
3 inches high by 22 inches long by 10 inches wide
CONDITION: In nearly new condition
PROVENANCE: Gift, acquired from the artist
CAD $ 1,500-2,000*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.

Thanks Delia. My research gave similar results. I even tried contacting the artist, but he never got back to me. This piece belongs to a series he produced a while back. My husband remembers finding 3 other very similar pieces, and they were valued between $1300-$2100 cdn.

This is helpful, Guy, as I've not yet heard from the artist.
Those prices will be retail prices, which you'd be unlikely to recoup if you sold this at auction, but if you wanted to sell it privately prior to moving you should start with asking CAD$2,500 to see if you get any takers. You can always come down on your asking price but at least you won't risk 'underselling' it.
If the artist gets back to me I'll let you know and update this appraisal if necessary but I didn't want this to linger...
Thanks again for using Mearto and have a great day.

Thanks Delia. Could you provide guidance on how/where we could try and sell the piece?

You might try Catawiki, a digital sales platform we have a partnership with; you can read about that here: https://www.mearto.com/catawiki. If you do decide to consign this platter to Catawiki, you'll shortcut the process if you use this link: https://prf.hn/click/camref:1101lHtv3/pubref:delia

Consignment fees to other auction houses may be steep but if you'd like to maximize your return for this, you might try an auction house such as Rago or Wright that regularly hold sales of contemporary pottery and glass since that will be a more specialized audience than for more garden variety antiques.

I hope this helps - let me know if you have additional questions.

Good morning Delia - I looked at Catawiki and unfortunately they no longer take sellers from Canada. We're in Montreal - could you recommend an action house closer to us?

Guy,
I have no experience with any of these but they appear to be in or close to Montreal and sell modern or contemporary glass and ceramics, which is the market you'll want to have specialist attention and expertise in.
