Description

This all glass lamp and shade was an inheritance so I can only assume it was bought in an art gallery. Our cleaning service broke the shade and I need to know the value to hopefully get restitution

Provenance

Owned by my parents, probably purchased in the 1980's in an art gallery. If it has value as is, damaged yes I would sell it. I

What does this mean?

Good afternoon, Jeffrey,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Mearto does not provide insurance appraisals; on the website there are a list of separate appraisers that can provide you with a formal appraisal which your insurance company will require before making restitution.
If, however, you need an idea of what this was worth both prior to damage and in its current condition, I can help you with that.

Please advise,
Delia

Hi Delia,
An accurate idea of value not a formal appraisal is acceptable to me.

Is it signed or otherwise marked anywhere (often near the rim of the shade, or on the underside of the base)? Are there records from when it was purchased?

Jeffrey sanderoff May 11, 18:59 UTC

I have no records of the purchase. There are also no labels or markings on the lamp or lampshade. Here is a long shot, there is another lamp that was designed by Piotr Sierakowski in their collection. The style is totally different and it is made of metal but anything is possible I guess.

It's unfortunate; it will take some time to research this, possibly beyond the 48 hours so just letting you know. If that's a problem let me know.

No problem at all.

Hi Jeffrey,
I've drawn a blank in making an attribution to a specific studio / artist (even after showing the photos, which makes evaluating lamp the pre-damage difficult. I can say that the damage to the shade is quite significant both structurally and aesthetically and devalues the lamp considerably, by AT LEAST 50% (one could put another kind of shade on the lamp so it is not a complete loss).
In it's present condition, however, I would be hard pressed to see it bringing more than $75-100 at auction in the market today and would catalog it - at present - as an unattributed 20th Century studio art glass lamp base.
Under the circumstances, Mearto has done the best we can for you, though I think we have fallen short of what you may have hoped for.

I understand what you are saying and yes it has been devalued considerably. However, my goal is to collect from the cleaning service
for the damage they did so I am more interested in the pre damage value.
Can you provide a ballpark?
