Hi Lila,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Can you please take and add a few more photos that show this tankard from different sides and angles and of the bottom as well; also, the photo of the mark is not very clear so a clearer photo of that would be helpful, and if you can tell me where that mark is?
Thanks!
Delia
Other side deer this tankard is very heavy
Hi Lila,
Thanks for the additional photos. I'm still skeptical that this has connections to Leonardo da Vinci, though I can quite understand why you'd want there to be. May I share these photos with a colleague who has expertise in Northern European earthenware tankards (they are currently away on vacation but they'll be back next week) to see what they think? There wouldn't be an additional charge but it will take longer to finish this appraisal.
Please let me know that's OK.
Thanks,
Delia
It is fine to wait until your colleagues return I think that would be wise.I hadn’t mentioned it yet : I feel in and above the line overhead of the stylized mark. It looks like he may have written out his full name but when it was fired it puffed out making it in in readable a couple letters still intact-an if one counts those markings it equals out to the letters in his name L. And V Thanks for your time to do this. Best regards Lila
In comparison of like tankards. My stein has a sharper deeply cut pictures
I was thinking of Leonardo devinci and his style of artwork on the piece is more defined and clearer. The other steins look weak in detail not really detailed at all. I also saw on line a tankard that was hand thrown bottom and the handle looked very much like my stein. Hope that helps
Actual auction. I was thinking more like a soethby’s. And if appraisal works in my favor. I would like to see my item break in the news. Because this is an assertion of actually being a time traveler
The delineation shows it is over the top of what others were doing around same time. Please share with colleague and you have my permission to approach Sotheby’s as long as it gets world wide attention of breathing news before it is auctioned off. Thanks very much. I am sure we could come to an agreement together. Kindest regards. Lila
Sent photo for comparison
Lila,
Are there marks on the pewter or silver lid and/or thumb mount?
Can you please take/add a photo of those?
Thanks,
Delia
The main reason LDV made my tankard is because he took trip into the future that is why th”huntsman” is so prominent on the face of this tankard. Mankind had never seen such a rifle as sculpted on the face of tankard. The rest of the external face is deer. GAME in the woods and a larger figure the “huntsman” himself this iconography doesn’t come into mankind’s environment until much later when it was artwork as usual and made into glass and paintings.LDV made many drawings of futuristic contraptions he likely didn’t understand ,but drew onto codexs’ pages
Lila,
My colleague, who specializes in European earthenware tankards, and I are both 100% certain that Leonardo da Vinci did NOT make this tankard; the similarities between the initials on your tankard and initials on works he did is coincidental.
If there are marks on the silver or pewter mounts, that will tell us more definitely when and where this was made.
Thanks very much!
Delia
Did you see the black /white copy of Leonardo’s actual marking I took that picture off the internet it looks exactly like the one on my stein thats the big clincher. I don’t think you got it also stringing me along with my emails back to you and not going through telling me the jpeg only so I kept trying to start over to get my pictures in jpeg. Please refund all the extra money I spent trying to get into your office computer
The signature on the handle is very much Vinci as I just discovered it Probably marked separately for firing and ownership rights among others after it was ready to be fastened to the tankard
The jpeg of the handle if you look at it the opposite way than the first time looking you can make out”Vinci” it’s unbelievable marvel of this piece. I’m sure he had to mark it for identifying conclusionnrss after the firing.
Double barrel shot gun rifles invented 1900. I had to get magnifying glass to see it clearly.
Lila,
Yes, I saw the additional photos - any parallels with the "signature" on this and those elsewhere are coincidental; he did not make this tankard.
If there are marks on the pewter or silver lid, please let me know and I'll appraised this with an attribution if possible; otherwise, it's an 18th Century European earthenware tankard worth less than $500.
Thanks,
Delia
It says “Vinci 1516. “ Reading from left to right with the pewter on the right I hope you’ll be able to see it! Thanks for your help!
I see nothing that looks like that. Can you edit a photo showing what you mean?
Signatures would/should be incised (carved) rather than raised.
The mark is to the right of the rifle by tree it looks white on the beige background. Hard to see
