Hello Mary Rose,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Indian Runner Rug. The piece dates back to the period from 1970 to 1990. The piece is entirely floral in decoration. The ratios of it's sides are pretty particular because it is a very long and narrow rug, usually not seen. This might indicate it was either produced for touristic sales or for a specifically narrow hallway or a corridor. The piece does not reflect any specific design but is influenced by Persian Bidjar Runner Rugs. Indian ateliers are usually produces commercially made pieces for touristic sales to Europe or United States. The piece is not centrally decorated but rather decorated with duplicated medallions through the pattern. The piece's knot density is not very high, therefore the motifs are rendered somwhat muddy. The piece is knotted wool on cotton. The central area is knotted on a bright red base while the borders are decorated on a black base. The piece is in fair condition with ware to several areas, the worn area are showing the white cotton foundation, there are loss to the fringes as well.
