Hello Nick,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Chinese Kilim made in China. Dating back to the period between 1970-2000. Starting from the 1970's Chinese weaving houses were established in order to meet the demand of the Oriental Rugs of the Western market. As these weaving houses offered a lot cheaper prices especially over Turkish producers many Turkish weaver and weaving ateliers started bankrupting in mid 1980's due to cheaper options from Chinese producers. Although Chinas have a long history of textiles Oriental rug production is was just a commerccial activity created in the 20th century for the Chinese to meet demands. Alongside reproducing Oriental Rugs they've also produced pieces with Chinese style of decoration as your piece. On this piece we can easily detect a central pattern which is durrounded by floral motifs. A pale tone of red was used in the base, this colours made the ivory and plae green colours to pop-out from the rug. The borders are knotted on a black base and depicts classical Chinese geometrical decoration with Meander like motifs. On each corner of the central decoration we can spot a semi-central medallion which enhances the decorational value of the piece. The knot density seems averagefor these pieces and motifs are rendered clearly. Usually Chinese pieces catches lower prices in auctions in comparison to Oriental Rugs from Turkey or Iran.
