I own the safari hat worn by Rob Frisbee during season 1 of The Amazing Race. It appeared on screen and in print media. It is signed by him. I bought it directly from him during his ebay auction in 2002. I have emails between him and me about this.
Hi George,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The Amazing Race is significant for redefining competitive reality television through its global travel format. Premiering in 2001 on CBS, it follows teams racing around the world, completing culturally themed challenges in different countries. The show won multiple Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Reality Competition Program (a category it dominated for years), helping legitimize reality TV as a respected genre. It’s also notable for showcasing international locations and cultures to mainstream audiences, inspiring numerous global versions. Its blend of strategy, endurance, cultural immersion, and partnership dynamics set the template for modern competition reality shows.
Rob Frisbee, who competed with friend Brennan Swain, made reality TV history when they won The Amazing Race in its first season.
There’s no clear record from major memorabilia auction houses (e.g., Prop Store, Julien’s, RR Auction) of official props or items used in Season 1 of The Amazing Race being sold for significant sums so I've looked to what memorabilia from comparable reality TV shows has brought.
In 2022, items from the first season of Survivor - including the original voting urn, Borneo immunity necklace, and Tagi tribe camp flag - were offered in a private charity auction, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to Stand Up 2 Cancer; the group had a combined value of more than $500,000 but I'm not finding any records - and the website is no longer active - of what those items actually sold for. I've found a Reddit thread notes that in one charity auction (I don't know if it was the same or not but likely not), the least expensive items were small tribe emblem mats (used to mark lanes in challenges) and went for around $700-$800. The most expensive item was the life-sized hand-carved season 41 logo that went for somewhere around $13,000-$15,000. Each of the contestants torches sold anywhere from $1,000-$3,000.
If you're looking to sell this at auction, I'd approach an auction house with a dedicated entertainment memorabilia department or specialization such as Julien's, Bonhams, Christie's, PropStore or RR Auction (they'll place their own values on this) but I would not be surprised if it was offered with an estimate of $5,000-7,000 or a final result higher than $10,000.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.
