What does this mean?

Hello Laura.

Thank you again for your appraisal inquiry with MeArto. The item presented appears to be a color woodblock by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重, 1797-1858). The image is titled "Suruga Bank of the Öi River near Shimada" from the series titled "Famous Places at the Fifty-Three Post-Stations along the Tokaido Highway," published by Tsutaya Kichizö.

The oban print appears to be from the 1855 impression. However, further examination of the print outside the frame may lead to additional information and authentication. This series has been reproduced many time over the years in many print types. Assuming this print does date to the mid-19th-century, the estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of a print from the series. Otherwise, the value of reproductions are about a third to half the value provided.
