What does this mean?

Hi Bryan,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry...what a nice present!

This looks like an original production layout drawing from a Winnie the Pooh animated featurette or television production by Disney; it includes the classic characters Eeyore, Tigger, Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Kanga, Roo, Owl, and Gopher gathered around a table of food (It's interesting to note the presence of Gopher, who was a Disney-original addition in the late 1960s and which does not appear in A.A. Milne’s books).

The yellowish paper, blue pencil under-drawing, and red pencil production notes are typical of Disney’s animation workflow in the 1960s–1980s. The notes at the bottom (e.g., “SC 3/17 BG 1/1” and “POS B is 4” L of +”) refer to scene numbers, background references, and camera positioning. “3/71” (March 1971) suggests this could be tied to production work around that time — possibly "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too" (1974) or part of the compilation "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" (1977), which used earlier material. The text "THIS IS CHANGED. DO NOT USE" suggests this was a deleted or altered sequence that was storyboarded for one of the featurettes but replaced before final animation.

Disney production drawings provide a keen insight into the inner workings of a studio that produced cultural references for several generations; with computer animation, they are now almost a lost art but ones that come to auction from time to time, though it's extremely rare to find ones with so many notes. This would likely do very well with an auction estimate of $300-500 and I would suggest selling it at an auction house that has dedicated Disney auctions (Heritage Auctions in Dallas and Van Eaton Galleries in Los Angeles are two of the most prominent ones, though they might suggest a different estimate upon physical inspection...)

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
