Hi Marty,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
IKEA is significant because it reshaped the way people around the world think about furniture, design, and retailing. Its impact extends beyond home goods into culture, economics, and even sustainability. Founded in 1943 in Sweden by Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA’s mission was to make well-designed, functional furniture affordable for the masses. It emphasized Scandinavian modern design — simple, clean lines, light wood, and practicality — and made it available at prices ordinary families could afford.
IKEA pioneered the flat-pack (ready-to-assemble) concept in the 1950s. By selling furniture in flat boxes, it reduced shipping costs, storage space and consumer prices. This approach revolutionized furniture logistics and created a new market segment of self-assembled furniture. Today, IKEA operates in over 60 countries and is one of the world’s largest furniture retailers.
IKEA has not been fully embraced by the antiques collecting community and Baby Boomers, though it has a devoted following among late vintage collectors, including people in Generations X and Z.
From the style, it resembles some of IKEA’s convertible sofa beds (they often use this “click-clack” or fold-down mechanism with split backrests). The separate bolster pillows were included on several models from the 2000s–2010s, like IKEA Beddinge Lövås / Beddinge Resmo – came with large loose cushions, often used as back bolsters. IKEA Sater / Lycksele – another line of compact sleepers with large back pillows. IKEA Kivik and Landskrona – leather or faux leather sofas with large square bolsters that look very similar to yours.
The design in your photo looks closest to the Beddinge or Lycksele series (depending on the exact frame underneath), but upholstered in brown leather/faux leather, which might have been a slipcover option.
These don't usually come up to auction these days but most auction houses would probably appraise this at between $500 and $800.
