+89 in long by 56 in wide. hand chain stitching on black woven wool base material. I purchased this in Germany in 1980 while serving in the Army. My wife was told it originated in India; they had purchased it 20 years previously while vacationing in India. Their story is that the rug consisted of two halves that were prepared and then joined at some point around the wedding ceremony time. Probably lost quite a bit of the story in translation. The base material and stitching all appear to be wool. We bought it based upon its folk or tribal simplicity and myriad of colors woven together.
Bought privately from a German couple in 1980. They stated they had purchased it in India while vacationing there in 1960. It has been a wall hanging in our home since purchase.
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a hand embroidered textile from western India, Gujarat. Such were used during the wedding ceremony to decorate the canopy. Although colorful and with some ethnic charme to it, the market value is rather modest as the supply is higher than the demand.
