Indigenous Women wood sculpture
This tall wood sculpture (40”). is of an indigenous women from the highlands of Chiapas Mexico. It is set on a round base whose top has floral and geometric designs. She is barefooted wearing a long skirt with detailed floral designs which mirrors the base. She has a shoulder bag on her left shoulder, and a small pouch on the waistband. She is supporting large woven basket on top of her head which demonstrates impeccable detail. The contents and the basket are also displayed. Two well-spaced braids spill from the back of head. The material is a local tropical hardwood called “Huanacastle” which is extremely dense. This piece weighs around 20 Kg. The artist is Jordan Utrilla Rojas, from Chiapas Mexico. Jordan specializes in highly detailed wood sculptures of mostly local themes. His works are sold almost exclusively to an art dealer based in Mexico City. This is a signed piece and comes with Certificate of Authenticity

The presented object appears to be a hardwood sculpture with measurements of around 40 inches. The sculpture depicts an elderly indigenous woman wearing a basket with fruits on her head. She wears a skirt with a flower pattern. Also typical for the highlands of Chiapas and mainly in whole Mexico, the woman wears a shoulder bag. She brings these fruits to the market and the colorful markets of Mexico were established as a motif in art by Diego Rivera. This artwork was made in the late 20th century by the artist Jordan Utrilla Rojas who works in Chiapas.
Works by this artist were recently not offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
