Hello Lee,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Tabriz Style Rug made in India, around 1960-1975 period. Usually Tabriz designs have a central medallion that is surrounded by arabesques, and other floral & garden inspired patterns (cypresses and weeping willows). However, unlike most other cities and villages, Tabriz has one of the most diverse range of designs, from medallion, to figural, pictorial and more. The most famous Tabriz design is known as 'Tabriz Mahi'. The design is based on a famous Persian garden that is divided into four sections by a stream. In the stream are many fish. The word 'Mahi' in Farsi is 'Fish'.
Of course your piece just adapts the style but it is not made in Iran. This can be detected on your piece by taking a look at various features. For example, the colour palette of this piece is rather different than the traditional Tabriz Rugs. Back in classical period, orange was a very hard colour to obtain. So either it was never used in rugs or was just used for really small details. On your piece, orange colour and it's various tones are used heavily and even as a base colour! Of course the specific yellow used on borders and it's combination with the orange does help you too understand it's Indian origin. Knot quality is average, the designs are looking somewhat muddy. Normally in high-end tabriz pieces, knots are very dense and the rendering of the motifs are almost completely clear. Collectable and decorative, the pile is wool and the warp is probably wool as well. Indian pieces usually uses a cotton warp.
