Hi Edward,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The mark is very faint but a few elements are still readable with reasonable confidence: along the right side, the vertical letters “PRIX” are visible. Along the top arc, the word “DÉPOSÉ” (often written without accents as DEPOSE) appears to be present. In the center, there seems to be a cherub / putto figure or classical emblem, though it is heavily worn. These words - "PRIX DÉPOSÉ” mean “registered prize” or “prize-winning, registered” and this is likely made by a maker who won prizes for their work.
The tradition of carved ivory tankards is not as strong in France as it was in Germany or other central European cities, where guild culture and ceremonial drinking are part of the cultural identity. This might be a German or Central European ivory tankard that was sold through a French dealer, registered or exhibited in France or intended for the French market and was therefore marked. It could also be a revival piece, made in the 1880s-1930s rather than in the 18th or early 19th Century.
Because of the restrictions on selling ivory, you might have difficulty selling it (see https://www.fws.gov/frequently-asked-questions-about-elephant-ivory) but other ivory tankards of this size and age (late 19th/early 20th Century) that have sold at auction recently have brought prices ranging from $4,000 to $6,000. I'm upgrading the value a bit because the the exceptional carving.
