Hello Sarah,
Thank you for your appraisal inquiry with Mearto. I apologize for the delay in your appraisal and thank you for your patience. The items presented appear to be woodblocks. There appears to be two woodblocks by Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重, Japanese, 1797-1858) from his "Tokaido Fifty-Three" Stations series, published by Uchida Art Co. LTD. These prints are typically reprints after the artist's original impressions. Also seen appears to be a woodblock by Kōno Bairei (幸野 楳嶺, Japanese, 1844 - 1895) titled "Hibiscus and Sandpipers." Further examination of these prints outside the frames may determine proper age and authenticity. The estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of these prints as a group. The estimate is contingent on a full condition report. Please note asking or dealer prices may vary. Thank you and please take care.
Hi Sarah,
Based on the images, the Bairei print is likely a later reprint. Typically, prints published by Uchida are later reprints but I have seen originals before. Originals will have inscriptions to the margins. If you see inscriptions, please feel free to upload image and I will try to determine age. The paint on the back of the prints is likely ink from printing or added paint, not original to the item.
Thank you for the information.. the back of the pieces actually has paint on them...How can I confirm if it is an original or a reprint to obtain actual value?
