Wood scabbard, no fittings Good condition
Blade 28.5 in Handle 9.5 in
Hello,
This sword appears to be a genuine Japanese katana, likely forged using traditional methods (tamahagane steel folding) but mounted in very simple, utilitarian wood mountings (shirasaya style). Shirasaya is a plain wooden resting scabbard traditionally used for protecting blades when not in combat-ready mounts.
The lack of visible decorative fittings (koshirae) suggests that this was intended either for storage, transport, or possibly presentation rather than immediate use. The overall form, curvature (sori), and length are appropriate for a standard katana, and the dimensions suggest it is not a reproduction (which often are lighter or wrongly proportioned).
If there is a signature (mei) on the tang (nakago) that is not visible here, that could considerably affect the value.
Condition Notes:
The blade appears to be in relatively good condition but may have some surface oxidation visible, particularly near the tang area. No major chips or fatal flaws (like cracks) are obvious in the photographs. Polishing (if professional and minimal) could reveal a visible hamon (temper line), further confirming traditional forging. However, polishing must be done cautiously to avoid devaluing the piece.
