The inscription on the hilt of the sword points to the maker Kurisaka-no-kami Yasumichi (九里坂守康道 or 栗阪守康道) a Japanese swordsmith, primarily known as Yamato no Kami Yasumichi (大和守康道). He was active during the early Edo period, around the Kanbun era (1661-1673). It appears to be old folded steel construction. The sword appears to be in good condition - no chips in the blade though it does appear to have been previously re-sharpened, possibly more than once from the look of the blade. The sword is cane style yet maintains the shape and curvature of a normal Katana. The scabbard is made of hard wood. The sword was purchased in an antique market in Taiwan in the late 90s. Given that the Japanese held Taiwan from 1895 to 1945, I believe the sword may have come over from Japan during the occupation period.
The complete sword in it's scabbard is 40.5 inches. The blade is 26.75 inches long.
