Oil painting of man and sailboat 12 inches wide and 24 inches tall
My father bought the painting in Haiti
Dear Mark
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This undated oil painting appears to be by the Haitian artist called Jacques Engerrand - Gourgue (1930 -1996). This is a nautical scene of a man in his sailboat, and it is signed “JE Gourgue” on the lower right edge. Sight 24”h x 12”w. It is housed in a frame and appears to be in good condition overall.
This artist is one of Haiti's most celebrated and renowned painters of the 20th century. At age 17 Gourgue was encouraged by Hector Hyppolite to join Port-au-Prince's Centre d'Art. In 1948, the Museum of Modern Art exhibited his work called "The Magic Table" which is now part of their permanent collection.
The estimation highlighted in red above is based on comparables offered and sold at auction in the last five years. The subject work’s size, the composition, condition (based on photographs and comments provided), as well as the artists’ current auction market were taken into consideration when determining the estimate. In many cases, pricing for similar items available on the primary (retail) market vary and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
Please note that this valuation has been provided on the condition of authenticity, which may need to be confirmed with additional research. For more information, please visit www.mearto.com/authenticate.
