The carpet was bought on auction in Cape Town South Africa in 1978 by my mother. It is Kashmiri hunting scene made using vegetable dye and silk. The original paperwork was stolen along with her extensive jewelry collection. It was appraised 5 years ago at R350,000 / $18,000. I can not find a makers mark on it but it does have the wall hanging cover on back. It has never been laid on the floor apart from taking these photos and has always hung on the wall - 45 years now.

Hello Audrey,
This item is a Kashmiri hunting scene carpet made in 1977. It was purchased at an auction in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1978 and has been kept in excellent condition, primarily used as a wall hanging for the past 45 years. The carpet features intricate designs typical of Kashmiri craftsmanship, including detailed hunting scenes created using vegetable dyes and silk.
Kashmiri carpets are renowned for their high-quality materials and the intricate artistry involved in their creation. The use of vegetable dyes and silk enhances the carpet’s durability and adds a rich, natural sheen to its appearance. Hunting scenes are a traditional motif in Kashmiri carpets, often depicting various animals and hunters in a stylized, detailed manner, reflecting the region’s cultural heritage and artistic traditions.
The absence of a maker’s mark does not significantly detract from its value, given the detailed provenance and the high appraisal it received five years ago.
