Knights of Columbus Sword
13 January 2021
Description

This sword is mostly some sort of metal, although I'm not sure what the handle is made from. It is 5 inches wide at it's longest point, and 35 inches long without the scabbard. It is about 37 inches long when it is sheathed. It has some engraving in the metal on the sheath that says "K of C" with a crest of some sort. The bottom of the hilt is in the shape of a man, I assume to be Columbus. The blade of the sword itself says "Knights of Columbus" with some flourish designs around it.

Provenance

My uncle was an antique gun collector and he also attended gun shows and exhibitions. He gave me this item and a few others when he passed away.

What does this mean?

Dear Andrea,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The presented object appears to be a Masonic Knight Templar sword with a length of 37 inches with the scabbard. This piece was made out of steel, brass, and wood. The top of the hilt is decorated with a bust of Christopher Columbus and this sword was worn by a member of the "Knights of Columbus". Such ceremonial swords were used as signs of membership in Masonic orders, indicated the rank of the member, and are nowadays still often on the market especially in The United States. This piece was probably made in the late 19th century.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 80 to 160 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
Georg
