Hi Al,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Kutani ware (九谷焼, Kutani-yaki) is one of Japan’s most important and visually striking styles of porcelain. Originating in the 17th century, it is prized for its vivid colors, bold designs, and artistic innovation, both in Japan and worldwide.
The mark on this reads "Eiwa Kinsei " which translates to “made respectfully by Eiwa.” It is a modern Japanese export porcelain mark and while you say this has been in your family for about 100 years, the mark is later, from the 1950s.
Large porcelain services such as this typically sell at auction for an average of $6-8 per piece. Note this may be a lower price than what retailers may be asking for similar services.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A near 122-piece antique Japanese export Kutani parcel gilt porcelain part dinner service
made by Eiwa, circa 1950s, comprising:
12 Dinner Plates
9 Salad Plates

8 Coffee Cups and 8 Saucers
12 Tea Cups and 12 Saucers

Thank you for your appraisal. Please explain the sales process from here. Especially our cost to sell through you.
By chance do you know if this china typically contains any lead?
Best,
Al Grant
Happy to, and you have options!
If this appraisal is status "for sale" and "public," it's already on our marketplace and interested buyers can make offers to you directly (you're not obligated to accept any offers though would need to work out shipping to the buyer; we don't get involved with that.
Mearto has also partnered with Catawiki, a global auction platform; see this link (https://www.mearto.com/catawiki) for information; if you want to list this through Catawiki, use this link (https://prf.hn/click/camref:1101lHtv3/pubref:delia) which will tell them that you've used our services and shortcut the process somewhat.
Alternatively, there are any number of auction houses on the East Coast - within a stone's throw from you in RI - that could sell this on your behalf, though associated fees with selling through auction usually include commission, insurance and photography, while the cost of getting an item to the auction house is at your expense (the buyer pays the cost of shipping from the auction house to wherever they are).
If you still have questions, please let me know, and have a great evening.
Delia
Ok - thanks - great information.
do you know if there is lead in this type of China?
Al
Oh, right, sorry!
Lead wasn't required to be listed as early as the 1950s so I can't say for certain - there may be some.
A porcelain or antiques dealer in your area may be able to tell from holding it if there is likely to be any notable lead content.
You say that this china is for sale on your site - how do I see that as a buyer?
Thanks for the lead information.
Al
Something's not right -I'm not seeing the marketplace either. I wonder if they took it down briefly? Let me ask my customer service to see what the issue is (note we are all over the world and sometimes an answer can take up to 24 hours...)
Back when I have information!
Hi Al,
Seems they've only very recently taken down the marketplace for good as most people felt online marketplaces near them were as good if not better. I apologize for the mis-information, but my advice on Catawiki or local auctions is sound and straightforward.
Best,
Delia
Al, if there are different marks that are from earlier pieces, please attach photos and I'll incorporate that information, though it's unlikely to change the overall value of the set.
