Good afternoon,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Louis Renard (1678/79-1746) was an early-18th-century French-born publisher and map seller active in Amsterdam, best known for issuing some of the most visually striking and influential maps of the Enlightenment era. He was not a cartographer in the modern sense—he did not personally survey or draft maps—but rather a compiler, editor, and publisher who worked with leading cartographers of his time.
Renard’s fame rests largely on his 1719 publication "Poissons, écrevisses et crabes," a lavishly illustrated natural-history atlas, and on his role in publishing important maps by Guillaume de L’Isle, the foremost scientific cartographer of the period. Through Renard’s press, de L’Isle’s accurate, data-driven geography reached a wide European audience.
Your map is his "Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula Atlas de Navigation et du Commerce" and was first published by Ottens, in 1739. One well-known and well-respected maps database describes it as a "lavishly decorated double hemisphere world map, with smaller maps of the poles, above and below center. These are colored by region, and show routes of major explorers. California is shown as an island. The hemispheres are surrounded by ornate illustrations showing striking scenes of the heavens, warfare, agriculture, sailing ships and sea-monsters. Angels, cherubs, and mythical figures watch over from the clouds."
Renard's sea atlas was developed from the plates of Frederik de Wit, who published his own maritime work circa 1675. Renard's atlas was first published in 1715 but became so useful and popular it was re-issued first in 1739 with more editions continuing until 1802.
Colored versions of this map have sold recently for $2,650 (Trillium Antique Prints & Rare Books, Jan 2025, estimate was $5,000-8,000) and when it was offered by Bonhams in London in November 2017 for £3,000 - £4,000 it did not sell.
Assuming this is an original and not a later reprinting, a reasonable fair-market value for this would be $1,000-1,500.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
