Hi Margaret,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Landstrom Furniture Co. traces its roots back to 1879 in Rockford, Illinois. The name “Landstrom” was formally used from around 1928 onward. Before that, earlier operations may have had different arrangements but the company considers 1879 its founding date. They manufactured a wide range of furniture: bedroom suites, dining room suites, living room furniture, desks, secretaries, tables, buffets … the works.
The plant was located in Rockford, at 1908 Eleventh Street and the company appears to have operated until about 1958, after which it ceased (or was absorbed or sold).
This is in the Colonial Revival style, which emerged around 1876, gaining momentum after the U.S. Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, and remained influential well into the mid-20th century, especially the 1930s–1940s, when this cabinet was made. It arose as a nostalgic response to the ornate and eclectic Victorian styles, aiming to return to the perceived simplicity and integrity of early American colonial architecture. It drew especially from Georgian, Federal, and Dutch Colonial styles of the 17th and 18th centuries and was promoted as a patriotic architectural expression, symbolizing stability and traditional American values.
Comparable pieces - by both Landstrom and other contemporary makers, rarely sells for more than $1,000 at auction; in the case of this cabinet, it would mostly likely realize between $500 and $800 if sold at auction
