Large mask from the Grasslands of Cameroon
14 September 2026
Description

I purchased this mask in Cameroon in 1982. It is from the grasslands, made of hardwood and crowned by a circle of human figures. It is in good condition with a chipped piece of wood on the front and a split in the wooden circle on top of the face.

What does this mean?

Hello, this item is a large carved hardwood helmet mask from the Cameroon Grasslands, most plausibly associated with Bamileke or neighboring Bamum artistic traditions, dating approximately to the mid-20th century. The mask is distinguished by its broad anthropomorphic face, pronounced ears, elongated nose and especially the elaborate openwork superstructure formed by a circular arrangement of standing human figures. Such figural crowns occur on prestige and ceremonial masks connected with chiefly societies in the western Cameroon Grasslands, where multiple human figures can communicate rank, lineage, authority or the social community surrounding a ruler. The dark surface, substantial wear, carved interior and the reported acquisition in Cameroon in 1982 are compatible with an older locally produced object, although neither ritual use nor a precise workshop attribution can be confirmed from photographs alone.

The mask measures approximately 22 x 15 x 7 1/2 inches and has considerable sculptural presence. Condition includes a significant vertical split extending upward from the lower rear edge, another crack in the upper structure, surface abrasions and a chipped area, all of which reduce value but remain consistent with the age and use of a large carved wooden helmet mask. Comparable Cameroon Grasslands masks without documented pre-colonial provenance or a named historic collection generally occupy the mid-hundreds to low-thousands market, while firmly documented early examples can achieve substantially more. Given the scale, unusual ring of figures, convincing age characteristics, 1982 acquisition history and existing structural damage, the following range is appropriate.
