Lovely Beaded Mask from the Grasslands of Cameroon
14 September 2026
Description

I purchased this mask in Cameroon in 1982. It is made in wood and covered with tiny colorful beads and cowrie shells around the face.. It is a grasslands mask in really good condition considering its age. It does not show damage.

What does this mean?

Hello, this item is a Cameroon Grassfields wooden helmet mask, most likely Bamileke or Bamum, decorated with dense rows of small glass beads and extensive cowrie-shell ornament. The hollowed interior, substantial depth, and scale of approximately 18 x 12 x 7 inches show that it was conceived as a wearable helmet mask rather than a purely decorative wall mask. The stylized elongated face, narrow pierced eyes, projecting ears, and elaborate lateral coiffure are consistent with prestige masks associated with Grassfields courts and masquerade traditions. Cowrie shells and imported beads functioned historically as markers of wealth and status in this region. Based on the construction, surface wear, and materials, I would place it broadly in the mid-20th century, possibly somewhat earlier, although the photographs alone do not allow a precise dating or attribution to a particular workshop.

The mask was reportedly purchased in Cameroon in 1982, which provides useful collecting history, although no documented provenance predating that purchase is supplied. It appears to be in good overall condition, with the beadwork and cowrie-shell elements largely intact, natural surface wear, and an aged, darkened interior consistent with handling and use. The combination of large size, elaborate beadwork, surviving shell decoration, and strong sculptural form makes it more desirable than the many later decorative Grassfields masks on the market. Comparable authentic or plausibly mid-century Cameroon examples without documented royal or ceremonial provenance generally sell in the upper hundreds to low thousands of dollars, while firmly documented early examples can achieve substantially higher prices.
